Let’s talk about gold filled!
Gold filled jewelry consists of an actual layer of gold that is pressure bonded to another metal. Gold filled is one of the most valuable and tarnish resistant jewelry processes for creating gold jewelry. When properly cared for, your gold filled jewelry can last a lifetime and thanks to its durability, there's no need to worry about wear.
Gold filled jewelry is not real gold jewelry, but it still has the durability and the same look of high-end designer jewelry without breaking the bank. Our jewelry business takes pride in using gold filled material in our gold necklaces, gold earrings, gold rings, gold bracelets, and gold anklets. As a Luna Lux Gems customer we want to ensure that you always feel confident and shine like the true gem that you are when wearing our pieces!
KEEP IN MIND!
The pH of your skin may react to metal jewelry. It could be not having enough water, if you have lotion on where your jewelry is, even not drinking enough water. Please me mindful because the acidity of your skin can play a rule on tarnishing your pieces. It can also be caused by other things on your skin, such as lotion, oils, or perfumes. Don't worry though, just wipe down the area where you applied anything before placing your gems on!
If you have a known allergy to brass, please be aware when purchasing our gold-plated and gold-filled jewelry. While gold fill has an outer layer of 5-10% 14k gold over brass, it still contains brass as a base metal and skin highly sensitive to brass may be affected. For these customers, we recommend gold vermeil or solid gold jewelry. All of our pieces are nickel- and lead-free.
Gold jewelry may vary slightly in color. This is because, unless it is 24k (meaning 100% gold), it’s a mixture of gold and other metals (called gold alloy). 24k solid gold is quite soft and can easily dent and scratch, making it less durable for everyday use. 14k gold is 14/24 or about 58% gold, and about 42% other metals - this is the most common gold selection due to its durability. The particular mixture of metals gives gold alloy its own particular hue and tone and can vary slightly.

1. What is Gold-Filled?
Gold filled is a United States layered gold product that is gaining popularity throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe. It is a quality material that is common in all types of jewelry. The product is easy to care for and will usually maintain its golden shine for a lifetime.
Gold filled jewelry is constructed in two or three layers. The core metal is jewelers’ brass. A gold alloy is then bonded to one or both surfaces of the brass core with heat and pressure. Unlike plated (aka electroplated or "dipped") metals, Gold-filled is legally required to contain 5% or 1/20 gold by weight. This 5% is then described by the karatage of the gold alloy. Our Gold-filled items are 14kt gold-filled. 14 karat Gold-filled products are identified as 14/20 Gold-filled; alternatively, 14 karat Gold-Filled is also acceptable.
2. What is Gold Plated? – Gold plating is a layer of solid gold applied to a brass base. The plating does not compose any measurable proportion of the products total weight. It is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating will generally wear off rather quickly and expose the brass base product. It does not stand up to heat, water or wear over time.
3. The Difference Between Gold-Filled and Solid Gold
Solid gold is an alloy that is described with the karatage of pure gold. Pure gold is 24 karat. However, it is much too soft to hold its shape or wear well. Therefore, it is mixed or alloyed with other metals to make it harder and easier to work with. Karatage refers to the alloy’s purity. For example, 8 karat gold is 8/24 pure gold or 33.3% pure. Gold-filled is not the same as solid gold. It is a layered alternative product. The gold-filled karatage only refers to the gold layers that compose 5% of the product on the surface.
4. What is Gold Vermeil?
Vermeil, or gold vermeil is a term coined for sterling silver items that are plated with a thin layer of gold. It is essentially a more valuable gold-plated option. In America, to be considered vermeil, an item must be coated with gold at least 10 karats pure. On top of that, the gold layer must have a thickness of at least 2.5 microns. Vermeil is also always marked as .925 or Sterling.
5. Can I Get My Jewelry Wet?
Yes you can, unless it is gold plated and we always state if a charm is gold plated or not in our description for each piece. We just do not recommend spraying perfume directly on your gold filled jewerly. Remember to clean it with a warm cloth after contact to keep the shine on your gold filled jewelry.

7. Will My Jewelry Tarnish?
With proper care, your gold filled jewelry will not tarnish because gold filled is known to be tarnish resistant. Our gold filled jewelry is rarely gold plated, once in a while will a charm be gold plated, but we inform you if so. You are able to wear our gold filled necklaces, gold filled hoops, gold filled earrings, gold filled rings, gold filled bracelets, and gold filled anklets.

9. How do I take care of my jewelry?
With any type of jewelry, even solid gold jewelry and solid silver jewelry, regular cleaning and upkeep is needed to keep your gold filled jewelry at its best condition. Simply use warm water and soap or a polishing cloth to clean. You can use our gold filled jewelry in water, however do wipe it down with warm water after you’re done, especially after being submerged in salt water. Sweat can also make your gold filled jewelry duller quicker, especially gold filled necklaces, so remove these when you are working out. To learn more, click here!
